About the Service
COMING SOON
DSA Non-Medical Helper (NMH) support provides practical in-session assistance for university students who have been assessed as eligible for this type of support through the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA).
Who is this for?
University students who have a DSA needs assessment recommending Non-Medical Helper Support
Students with dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) who require in-session study assistance
Students who need support with organisation, planning, academic reading and writing skills
What is a Non-Medical Helper?
A Non-Medical Helper (NMH) provides practical support during study, which may include academic reading and writing assistance, organisational and planning skills or helping a student to structure and process information. NMH support is distinct from academic tutoring - the focus is on enabling access and reducing learning barriers, not teaching course content.
NMH support is funded through DSA and is recommended during a needs assessment by a DSA assessor. Your funding letter will confirm the type and number of hours of support you have been allocated.
What Sessions May Include
Academic reading assistance
Support with organising, structuring and planning written work
Help to break down and process complex information such as essay and dissertation briefs
Support with prioritising workload and meeting deadlines
Not Yet Sure About DSA?
If you are a university student who suspects you may have dyslexia but have not yet had a formal assessment or applied for DSA, Brilliant Brain can support you through that process too. A dyslexia assessment is the starting point for a DSA application, and strategy coaching can help while you wait for your funding to be confirmed.
Further information on DSA and the application process can be found on the Student Finance England website.
