Karyn's Story

My journey into dyslexia support began when my daughter was struggling to make progress in primary school. She had a strong imagination and a rich vocabulary, but found it extremely difficult to read and to express her ideas in writing.

As her frustration grew, I tried to help her by creating fun, multisensory games,  and visual resources to keep her motivated and engaged. I even introduced mindfulness activities to help reduce her anxiety and support self-regulation. As her confidence developed, so did my interest in how individuals learn differently.

At the time, I had no understanding of dyslexia. I was simply trying to find ways to support my daughter's learning.

I went on to complete a Master’s degree in Special Educational Needs. During this time, I began to recognise that my daughter’s difficulties were consistent with dyslexia. A formal assessment later confirmed this.  Although the diagnosis provided some clarity, I became increasingly aware of how difficult it was to access clear, practical guidance at different stages of education.  This led me to train as a dyslexia specialist and gain experience across a range of settings, including schools, universities, and workplace settings.

Through this work, I have seen that many individuals progress through education or employment without a clear understanding of how they process information.

Brilliant Brain Dyslexia developed from this experience, with a focus on providing clear assessments and practical, comprehensive support.

Today, I work with adults, young people and children, helping them understand their learning profile and develop their skills for education, work, and everyday life.

And for context - ten years on, my daughter is now a confident reader who enjoys learning and continues to be highly creative.

Teaching Moment

I absolutely loved the support I received from Karyn. She helped me learn what works for me to achieve the goals I’ve always wanted regarding my degree. Because of Karyn, I was able to achieve the unachievable. I also appreciated the non-forceful approach to the sessions, as they were entirely led by me and focused on what I wanted to get out of them.
